'Twas The Night Before Baseball
Written by Ed Grimes
For the R&D Data Products - 1996

'Twas the night before our baseball game
and all through the town
not a ballplayer was sleeping
because our team was down

The baseball gloves were hung by the frig with care
with hope that Coach Chris soon will be there

Momma in her kerchief and I in my baseball cap
had just settled down for a short summer nap

When on the baseball field I heard such a clatter
I jumped from the dug out to see what was the matter

Away to the fence, I flew like a flash
tore open the equipment bag and threw out the mask

When what to my wandering eyes did appear?
but a Grand Cherokee and 13 tiny baseball players with no fear

With a little old driver so lively and brisk
I knew in a moment it must be Coach Chris

More rapid than eagles his players they came
and he whistled and shouted and called them by name

Now Dustin, now Eve, now Evan and Benny
On Allie, on Russell, on Kyle, on Genny
On CJ, On Mike B & T, on Ian, and Steffy
Now dash away dash away dash away all

So up to the batters box the players they led
with their bats in hand and helmets on their head

And then in a twinkling I heard Coach Chris say
Have fun, play hard and win you may

He had brought other coaches to help his team play
A Coach named Ed, who would pitch and pray

Coach Bob who helped the kids to sing
and Coach Bill who always reminded us of a level swing

The players played well and deserved one more good deed
so from his great list Coach Chris did read

A new pair of rocket shoes did Dustin receive
an invitation to first base was Stefany's reprieve

Sunglasses for CJ because on the first pitch he must wait
and some catcher's equipment for Genny, she really is great

A watch for Ben, we only have two hours to hit
and Allie a hand to fit her mitt

Eve will have a new found swing with a groove
and Kyle a left foot that just won't move

New gloves for Mike T to hold onto the bat
and straps for Ian so he won't lose his hat

Mike B the confidence he can hot Coach Ed
And direction for Evan to hit anywhere else but at Coach Ed

Russell new pants for slide stains that won't come out
and a new team song that we can all shout

Coach Chris then gave them a whistle
Go out and play hard and always hustle

The prancing and digging of each little cleat
as he watched his team never go down to defeat

They won many games and lost a few too
but pure sportsmanship was always their cue

but I heard him exclaim when he drove out of sight
stay in your ready position and have a good night.

Coach Chris, Ed, Bill and Bob
Thanks for a Wonderful Season
