Volunteers At Bat
Written by Ed Grimes
For the S.B.A.A. Volunteers - 1998
The outlook wasn't brilliant for the
South Brunswick Vols that day;
Their coaches stood two by two, to draft a team that would play,
And then when Gurney picked his players, and Albert made a scene,
A strange silence fell upon the drafting floor, as the Vols picked their team.
A few coaches got up in deep despair, The rest
Clung to that hope that their skills would be the best;
They thought, "If only the Volunteers could get a pick
They'd certainly draft a player like Dominic".
Lew preceded Singer as did Mike B,
And the former Sharf stars Mario and Bobby.
But Borque again proved tough to get, not to the wonderment of all
And they knew Thunell would hit the cover off the ball.
When the dust had lifted, and the coaches saw what had occurred,
There was Greco to play second and JJ hugging third.
With their final picks they proved not to yield;
They took Noah to command the field.
The South Brunswick coaches were still up to their old tricks,
So they knew to select Russell to break their sticks.
There was ease in the Vols manner as they took their place,
There was pride in Coach Chris' bearing and a smile lit his face.
And when responding to the cheers, he lightly tipped his hat,
No stranger in the crowd could doubt 'twas HIS Volunteers at the bat.
Then thousand eyes were on them, as they rubbed their hands in the dirt,
Five thousand tongues applauded when they wiped them on their shirts
Then while opposing pitchers would bite their lips
Defiance flashed in the Volunteers eyes as they smashed some hits
When the leather covered sphere hurled through the air
The Vols stood ready, with the keen sense of a wild bear.
From the benches, black with people, their went up a wild roar,
The Vols hit another, all the way to the Jersey shore.
"Next pitcher, next pitcher", shouted Dietz from his stand,
But it was Coach Chris' turn to play his hand.
With the smile of Christian charity Coach Chris' face shone,
But he showed no mercy... And Dietz went home.
Dietz followed the path worn deep by many
That to challenge the Volunteers, you better be ready.
Our Coach spoke of fair play, it was to play for his team,
For many of us, it was better than a dream
On somewhere in his favored land, the sun is shinning bright
The band is playing somewhere, but here our hearts are light.
And somewhere men are laughing, and little children shout,
But THERE IS JOY in South Brunswick... The Volunteers are JUST RIGHT.
